The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced that heatwave conditions are expected to persist across most parts of the country throughout the current week.

According to the PMD, continental air is dominating most parts of the country, with high pressure in the upper atmosphere expected to continue for the next few days.

As Pakistan grapples with a severe heatwave, health experts are stressing the importance of taking necessary precautions to stay safe and cool.

Senior ecologist Prof. Zafar Iqbal Shams from Karachi University’s Institute of Environmental Studies highlighted the significance of staying hydrated during the heatwave. He recommended drinking plenty of water and suggested enhancing hydration by adding lemon, a pinch of salt, light sugar, and mint leaves to water. Prof. Shams also mentioned that various refreshing drinks can help maintain fluid balance.

For those without air conditioning, Prof. Shams advised improving the sleeping environment for a restful night by utilizing methods to cool down, such as using fans or opening windows.

Additionally, wearing loose, light-colored clothing made from cotton can help prevent sweating and keep the body ventilated, according to Prof. Shams.

Consultant Ecologist Rafiul Haq echoed the importance of staying hydrated to avoid heatstroke. He advised reducing the consumption of hot items like tea and coffee and opting for water, lassi, and traditional desi drinks instead. Haq recommended increasing the intake of vegetables and fruits and avoiding eating out.

When venturing outside, Haq suggested walking in the shade and using a white towel or umbrella to shield oneself from direct sunlight. He emphasized the need to protect children from heatstroke by ensuring they stay hydrated and are shielded from direct sunlight. Sunglasses can also protect the eyes from harsh sunlight, reducing the risk of eye strain and related issues.

Haq cautioned against drinking cold water straight from the refrigerator after exposure to the sun, as it can lead to a sore throat, cold, or cough. Instead, he recommended drinking water from an earthen pot, which naturally stays cool and retains healthy minerals.

On Monday, the city continued to grapple with a heatwave as temperatures surged to 43.7°C.

The MET office issued a warning of further temperature increases, predicting a rise of 4 to 6°C above normal in Sindh and Punjab from May 21st to 23rd, and an increase of 6 to 8°C from May 23rd to 27th. Additionally, they forecasted that daytime temperatures in Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan would remain 4 to 6°C above normal from May 21st to 27th.

MET officials attributed the prevailing continental air to the hot and dry weather across most parts of the country, with central and southern areas experiencing particularly scorching conditions.

While rainfall was recorded in Parachinar, Kalam, Bagrote, Gilgit, Bunji, and Hunza, the highest temperature on Monday was observed in Sibbi at 48°C, while Lahore experienced a high of 43.7°C and a low of 27.6°C.

There is also a possibility of landslides in Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan during this period. Windstorms, hailstorms, and lightning may pose risks to human lives as well as to standing crops, structures like electric poles, vehicles, and solar panels.
