Punjab Assembly Speaker Suspends 27 Members
Malik Ahmad Khan has taken the decision on request of a SIC leader in light of the Supreme Court’s decision.
It seems like there’s been quite a shake-up in the Punjab Assembly following the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the allocation of reserved seats. The suspension of 27 MPs, including 24 female lawmakers and three minority MPs, has certainly altered the political landscape in the province.
The decision appears to have been prompted by MPA Rana Aftab of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) raising the issue in light of the court’s ruling, which led Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan to suspend the membership of the MPs representing various parties.
This move has not only affected the representation of different parties but has also shifted the balance of power within the Punjab Assembly, notably reducing PML-N’s support significantly.
The decision seems to be in line with the Election Commission of Pakistan’s aim to fill seats through proportional representation based on parties’ electoral successes, impacting not only the ruling alliance but also the PTI-backed SIC, which lost a significant number of reserved seats across various assemblies.
Overall, this development reflects the complex interplay between the judiciary, electoral regulations, and political dynamics in Punjab.
