Death anniversary of famous singer and actress of the ’40s, Khursheed Bano was observed on Thursday
On Thursday, the death anniversary of the renowned singer and actress from the 1940s, Khursheed Bano, was observed.
Born in Chunian, district Kasur, in 1914, her birth name was Irshad Begum. Khursheed Bano embarked on her film career under the screen name Shehla in the 1931 film “Eye for an Eye,” coinciding with the release of the first talkie film in the Indian subcontinent, “Alam Ara.” During this period, she appeared in several movies, including “Laila Majnu” (1931), “Muflis Aashiq” (1932), “Naqlee Doctor” (1933), “Bomb Shell” and “Mirza Sahiban” (1935), “Kimiagar” (1936), “Iman Farosh” (1937), “Madhur Milan” (1938), and “Sitara” (1939).
From 1931 to 1942, she worked in films produced by studios in Calcutta and Lahore, establishing herself as a singer-actress. In the 1940s, she appeared in notable films such as “Musafir” (1940), “Holi” (1940), “Shadi” (1941), “Pardesi” (1941), and “Bhakta Surdas” (1942), where the song “Panchee Bawra” gained popularity.
Her performance in “Nurse Tanseen” (1943), featuring Khemchand Prakash’s music, marked a significant milestone in her acting career. Some of her most famous songs include “Barso Re,” “Ghatta Ghan Ghor Ghor,” “Dokiya Jiara,” “Ab Raja Bhai Murai Balm,” and the duet “More Bal Pin Pin Sati Cheela” with LL Siegel.
After the partition, Khurshid migrated to Pakistan with her husband and settled in Karachi. In 1956, she acted in two films, “Fankar” and “Mandi.”
Khursheed Bano passed away on April 18, 2001, in Karachi.
