The Pakistan men’s cricket team will face England in the first of a four-match T20I series at Headingley on Wednesday. The remaining matches will be held in Birmingham (25 May), Cardiff (28 May), and The Oval, London (30 May). After the series, both teams will head to the USA and West Indies for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
The last T20I meeting between Pakistan and England was at the MCG in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, where England narrowly defeated Pakistan by five wickets. Sam Curran was named player of the final for his three wickets for 12 runs.
Pakistan, coming off a 2-1 series win against Ireland in Dublin last week, will field a full-strength team. Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi were standout performers, winning player of the match awards in their victories.
England leads the T20I rivalry with 19 wins to Pakistan’s nine, with one match ending in no result. In the last bilateral series, England won 4-3 in a seven-match series played in Lahore and Karachi.
Gary Kirsten, Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, began his two-year tenure with the team on 19 May, preparing for this series.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam, the most successful T20I captain with 46 wins, expressed confidence in maintaining their winning momentum from the Ireland series. He highlighted the team’s strengths and areas for improvement, emphasizing productive training sessions at Headingley and collaboration with head coach Gary Kirsten to fine-tune strategies for the T20Is against England and the upcoming T20 World Cup.
