Thousands of peaceful demonstrators gathered in Washington, DC Tuesday for a fifth consecutive day to protest the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died last week after being pinned down by a white police officer. Lafayette Park across from the White House was again the focal point for the demonstrations as protestors knelt down, clapping and chanting slogans including \u201cBlack Lives Matter,\u201d \u201cGeorge Floyd\u201d and \u201cNo Justice, No Peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
They had come together to express their outrage over Floyd\u2019s death, which has sparked both peaceful and violent protests nationwide as well as looting and vandalism.<\/p>\n
The park was closed off with a tall metal fence.<\/p>\n
Britney, a black Maryland resident who asked not to give her last name, said she wanted to be part of the \u201cdiversity\u201d of the people that were gathering at the protests.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to be seen,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Peggy Lee, a DC resident from the Asian-American community, said she was \u201coutraged\u201d by the video that has gone viral online showing Floyd being pinned down by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.\u201cI came here to show solidarity with Black Lives Matter rallies,\u201d she told Anadolu Agency.<\/p>\n
The nation’s capital is under a curfew that is in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Floyd, 46, was arrested on May 25 after reportedly attempting to use a counterfeit $20 bill at a store in Minneapolis, Minnesota.<\/p>\n
Video footage on Facebook showed him handcuffed and cooperating, but police claimed he resisted arrest.<\/p>\n
One of the officers, Derek Chauvin, pinned him to the ground and knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.<\/p>\n
Shortly after, Floyd appeared to lose consciousness, but Chauvin maintained his position on the victim.<\/p>\n
He died shortly after being taken to a hospital.<\/p>\n
His last words were “I can’t breathe,” which became the slogan of the nationwide protests.<\/p>\n
The protests came despite curfews in major US cities.<\/p>\n
